About the museum
Paper has been made in Weddersleben since 1549. The local paper mill is one of the oldest sites of this craft in eastern Germany; its commercial operation ended in 1991. In the restored historic mill buildings, the Lebenshilfe Harzkreis-Quedlinburg (an association supporting people with disabilities) set up a paper museum in 1997.
The exhibition shows the individual stages of papermaking using presses, a wooden vat and other equipment; two life-size figures illustrate the work of the papermakers, and finished papers are displayed in glass cases. The stamping mill has been restored to working order and is powered by a waterwheel.
Over the years, a hand papermaking workshop, a paper garden and an experimental area on Asian paper techniques were added. In the hand papermaking workshop, visitors can watch staff create paper art or make paper themselves. The museum is run by the Lebenshilfe Harzkreis-Quedlinburg.
