About the museum

The Parfuem-Museum was established in 2007 on the premises of a perfume and cosmetics manufacturer in the Baalborn district of Mehlingen. Originally, a classic exhibition of the perfume bottles collected over many years was planned. The film adaptation of Patrick Süskind's novel “Perfume” then gave the project a different direction: the rooms were designed as atmospheric sets evoking the 17th and 18th centuries.

Visitors found damp vaulted cellars, a large still and numerous dusty bottles with essences from around the world. On about 120 square meters, historical perfume bottles, raw materials and equipment for extracting essential oils were shown, along with a scent organ with many different scent samples. A selection of the house's own fragrances was also part of the display. The collector's pieces were gathered from all over the world, and visitors were meant not only to look at the scents but to smell them too. A sales room with perfume and cosmetic products is attached to the museum and remains open.

According to the house's website, the museum is currently closed until further notice.
