About the museum
The Museum Winnweiler opened on April 17, 2004. It is run by the non-profit association Museum Winnweiler e. V., founded in 1998. It is housed in a listed building on the Schlossstraße that belongs to the local municipality and whose origins go back to the 17th century; it was thoroughly renovated between 1998 and 2003.
The building was once the clerk's office of the neighboring Winnweiler Castle, served as an administrative building in the French period, was the clubhouse of a casino society from 1855 to 1936, and was used as a Red Cross military hospital during the First World War.
The main focus is Judaism, complemented by local and regional history. In 2012 a department on the Gienanth family and iron processing was added, and in 2014 the Ludwig Götz Cabinet. The association also operates a museum forge in the district of Langmeil.
