About the museum
The Bremerhaven local police authority is considered the last municipally organized police force in Germany. To preserve its history and strengthen crime prevention, the friends' association Förderverein für polizeiliche Prävention und Polizeigeschichte Bremerhaven e. V. was founded on April 23, 2002; it runs the museum together with the local police authority.
The exhibition occupies around 300 square meters in the former detention block of Stadthaus 6 in Lehe, which has held no prisoners since 1994. On show are cells with heavy doors, a 1970s office, a room on police history from 1827 to 1945, and an evidence room with objects from criminal cases, including the Thomas catastrophe of 1875.
The museum has been comprehensively renovated. Visitors are guided through the rooms by volunteer retired police officers, who tell stories from about 75 years of the local police authority.
