Poppelsdorfer Heimatmuseum

Volunteer-run local museum in the Clemens-August-Schule with paintings, documents and company history from Bonn-Poppelsdorf.

About the museum

The museum's foundation goes back to the Poppelsdorf parish priest Rudolph Hans Stöcker, who from 1953 gathered paintings, documents and other evidence of local history. When he retired in 1962, he bequeathed the collection to the city of Bonn; the city council accepted the gift unanimously on December 12, 1962. It was housed on the second floor of the Clemens-August-Schule, where it can still be found today.

In 1989 Helmut Uessem took over management of the local heritage collection, which Poppelsdorf residents simply call "our museum". Through gifts, donations and permanent loans the holdings grew to almost 800 exhibits. The Förderverein Poppelsdorfer Geschichte (Poppelsdorf history friends' association) is closely tied to the house: during opening hours a team of about six members looks after the museum, always two at a time.

On display are old prints, contemporary paintings, maps and plans of the town's history, as well as local documents and objects. A focus is on pieces from the formerly important Poppelsdorf firms Wessel, Soennecken and Zuntz; in addition there are, among other things, bottles from the former Actien-Brauerei brewery, roof corbels from the demolished Jägerhof inn and a church pew from the old Poppelsdorf chapel. Photo series and certificates document families, businesses, cafés, the cemetery, the church congregations and life on the Poppelsdorf campus. The collection is supplemented by a library of local literature, postcards, slides and videos.
