About the museum

The Neoclassical building in Endenich was built around 1790 as a residence and was converted in 1844 by the psychiatrist Franz Richarz into a private sanatorium and care home. In March 1854, Robert Schumann came here seriously ill after a suicide attempt; he occupied two rooms on the second floor and died there on July 29, 1856. Clara Schumann was not allowed to see him again until shortly before his death.

The house was badly damaged in 1944 during World War II. After a debate about demolition, preservation won out, and in 1963 the municipal music library and the Schumann memorial opened in the restored building. The Verein Schumannhaus Bonn (Schumann House association) was founded in 1982, and in 1984 the city acquired the listed building.

The two small memorial rooms display pictures, letters, documents and mementos – some originals, some facsimiles – relating to Robert and Clara Schumann and their family and circle of friends. The music library, with around 50,000 media items, occupies the rest of the house; its reading room also serves as a venue for house concerts and the Bonner Schumannfest (Bonn Schumann Festival).
