About the museum
The museum opened on June 13, 1998, in the building of the former village school in Insel, which had not held lessons since 1994/95. After the administrative reforms of the 1970s, many village schools in the surrounding area had been closed; in Insel an interest group formed early on to keep the building for the village. In the immediate area it is the third school museum of its kind, after those in Zetel and Steinhorst.
The museum is run by the Heimatbund Schneverdingen, which operates it as a separate department; running costs are governed by a usage agreement with the town. The old classroom was converted into a historic classroom, and the attic into an archive holding around 4,000 school books and 300 maps from dissolved schools of the former Samtgemeinde (collective municipality). The house also has rooms for a children's play group, a village kitchen and further exhibition space.
Visitors see multi-seat school benches with ink wells, a teacher's desk, blackboards, a harmonium and a peat stove. A separate room commemorates the heath poet Marie Kupfer (1864–1940), who was born in the schoolhouse as a teacher's daughter. Around 15 volunteers look after the museum and offer lessons in the style of the past to school classes and groups.
