About the museum

The museum is dedicated to the history of the Soltau salt spring and salt deposit. People have used the spring for thousands of years; it gave the town and the small river Soltau their name. Because of the Lüneburg salt monopoly, Soltau citizens were not allowed to produce and sell their own salt commercially from the Middle Ages into the early modern period.

The museum opened on May 30, 2015, after preparatory work by the Soltauer Salzsiedeverein (Soltau Salt Boilers' Association). The interior is in one of the town's oldest houses, Bahnhofstraße 6, where it shows how salt served as a means of payment and preservative and as a raw material for industry. A storage cellar from 1726 illustrates how valuable salt was in a time without refrigerators.

On the property opposite, at Bahnhofstraße 17, stand a well house over the historic salt spring, a boiling hut and a Gradierwerk, a replica of a medieval salt production facility. The museum is currently closed to visitors.
