About the museum
The steam brickworks in Altglietzen was founded in 1871 and was acquired by Max Hietzig after the First World War. The ring kiln was built in 1878 following the principle of the engineer Friedrich Eduard Hoffmann and was expanded and redesigned in 1929 to meet growing demand for building materials. After the Second World War, the Hietzig family helped rebuild the badly damaged works.
In Hoffmann's ring kiln, the firing chambers are arranged in a large oval through which a continuous fire travels in a circle, while the chambers are continuously loaded, sealed, opened and emptied. Coal firing gave the bricks and clinkers their typical, varied-colored surfaces. Around Bad Freienwalde, about 15 brickworks operated ring kilns until the 1950s.
Brick production in the Altglietzen ring kiln ceased in the mid-1980s. In 2006 a friends' association was founded to save the facility, and in 2012 the restoration was completed. Today an exhibition in the building informs visitors about the history and operation of ring kilns; occasionally, teaching and demonstration firings take place.
