About the museum
The Regional Museum in Cedynia opened on 19 June 1966, during the celebrations of the Millennium of the Polish State, which also included the unveiling of a monument at the hillfort. The institution was set up in the building where a first exhibition on the prehistory of Cedynia had been shown in 1959. It had been prepared by archaeologists from the Museum of Western Pomerania in Szczecin after the first excavations at the hillfort. The Szczecin museum, later the National Museum in Szczecin, became the patron of the new institution and helped equip it and provided professional guidance.
The collections come mainly from excavations at the Cedynia hillfort, its extramural settlement and cemetery, and the surrounding area, supplemented by donations from residents. The exhibition shows palaeontological specimens, everyday objects from the Stone, Bronze and Iron Ages, early medieval weapons and grave goods, including the skeleton of a warrior from the cemetery. For years the museum has also presented the history of the Battle of Cedynia and the fighting on the Oder in 1945.
Before the war the town already had a small museum room, set up in the town hall by a municipal official, but its collections were scattered in 1945. The museum is now a municipal institution of the Gmina Cedynia. After renovation it resumed operations on 15 January 2026, and the permanent exhibition has fully returned to the refurbished rooms.
