About the museum
The residence in Naundorf was built in 1914 by the Meissen architect William Becker. The painter Robert Sterl acquired it in 1919 and moved with his wife Helene from Dresden to Saxon Switzerland; to his own designs he had a generous studio added. From here he commuted by train to the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts, where he taught. Sterl died in his house in 1932 and was buried on the property, where the couple's grave is also located.
The childless couple had established a foundation in their will in 1931 to offer students of the Academy workspace in the house. After Helene Sterl's death in 1950, the long-serving housekeeper Helene Landgraf looked after the house, garden and grave. When state plans in 1978 threatened to distribute the estate among other institutions and put the house to a different use, a circle of friends was founded that was able to secure the holdings on site. Today the collection foundations of the Dresden district look after the legacy.
The house is considered one of the few original surviving artists' homes in Germany. It displays paintings, drawings, sketchbooks, letters and photographs from all phases of his work, as well as the library and studio furniture. Sterl became known above all for his pictures of work in the quarries of Saxon Switzerland, of Dresden musicians and of his Volga journeys.
