About the museum

The first traces of human use of the Tafelberg (table mountain) go back to the Bronze Age. In the Middle Ages a Bohemian castle stood here. A boundary document of King Wenceslas I names the rock as "Stein des Königs" (King's Stone), from which the later name Königstein derives. In the late Middle Ages the fortress passed through various owners to the Wettins and finally came permanently to Saxony. At times a Celestine monastery also stood on the plateau, which existed until 1524.

Under Elector August of Saxony, the Königstein was expanded into a state fortress. The water supply was decisive: a well roughly 152 meters deep is among the deepest historic wells in Germany. Over the centuries, casemates, arsenals, barracks, a garrison church and the Baroque pleasure palace Friedrichsburg were built. The fortress also served as a refuge for treasures and as Saxony's most important state prison, in use until 1922, which saw more than a thousand prisoners known by name.

Today the Festung Königstein gGmbH runs the site as a museum, with several permanent exhibitions in historic buildings, a walk along the outer walls and many viewpoints over the Elbe valley. In addition there are guided tours, including one through a bunker from the Cold War era, and an events program with a historic Christmas market.
