About the museum
In the vineyards north of Ungstein, a Roman villa and a wine press complex were uncovered in 1981 and partly rebuilt. They belong to one of the largest Roman estates in the Palatinate. The estate included the representative manor house with a columned façade and a large bath complex, as well as at least eight outbuildings.
Below the villa, the Roman wine press has been preserved. Its press house contained two basins in which grapes were trodden by foot; on special occasions this method is still demonstrated today. Parts of the residential building have been reconstructed and are accessible only as part of a guided tour; the remaining parts of the site can be visited at any time.
The German Wine Institute has honored the estate as a "Highlight of Wine Culture". In early summer, a wine festival takes place at the Roman wine press, and occasionally a Roman grape harvest with reenactors. The site is a stop on several themed trails about wine and the Romans in Bad Dürkheim.
