About the museum

The Grünstadt city museum occupies the two upper floors of the Old Town Hall in the pedestrian zone. The building was erected around 1600 on the former market square, had an open market hall on the ground level, and was rebuilt in its present form in 1906. The city administration moved out in 1944; today the first floor houses the tourist information and the council chamber of 1906.

The museum is run by the Altertumsverein Grünstadt-Leiningerland (antiquities association), whose founding in 1903 is also regarded as the beginning of the museum. After a reorganization it reopened in June 2022. Pieces from the old holdings that had been moved to Speyer in 1944 have returned, including a Franconian bow brooch and a Celtic drinking horn.

The exhibition spans from the early history of the Leiningerland to recent town history. Main themes are the Grünstadt painters Johann Conrad Seekatz and the Schlesinger family, the counts of Leiningen, Grünstadt ceramics and the former Jost brewery. The Emil-Sommer-Zimmer shows the living room of the blind newspaper publisher Emil Sommer.
