Sächsisches Rot-Kreuz-Museum Beierfeld
Museum in Beierfeld, run by volunteers, on the history of the Red Cross in Saxony and of the medical and rescue services.
About the museum
Even the members of the Beierfeld medical column and, later, the DRK local organization in the GDR kept mementos and maintained a chronicle. After the fall of the Wall and the merger of the two Red Cross societies in 1991, they made contact with Red Cross museums in the West and exchanged objects. In 1996 this led to the Rot-Kreuz-Museum in Beierfeld, the first of its kind in the new federal states.
The collection was initially stored in basement rooms of an old factory building. The town of Grünhain-Beierfeld later made a vacant residential building available to the DRK local association, which was converted. Since 2004 the museum has been housed on August-Bebel-Straße; an annex serves as an archive.
The permanent exhibition shows around 2,000 objects from over 150 years of Red Cross, medical, and military medicine history – from Henry Dunant through the Kingdom of Saxony and the world wars to the GDR and reunification. Recreated scenes show, for example, a tracing service office and a field hospital. In total the collection comprises more than 12,000 objects and a specialist library; loans have gone to museums in Dresden, Hamburg, and Kassel.
