About the museum
As early as 1922, a museum association was founded in Aue to build a collection on the development of the town and its surroundings; in 1936, the Städtisches Museum Aue (Municipal Museum Aue) opened. After the Second World War, it became the Kreismuseum (district museum) in 1954; it had to close in the mid-1960s because its rooms were needed for other purposes.
In 1973, to mark the town's anniversary, the mining museum "Traditionsstätte Erzbergbau" opened on Bergfreiheit. The Wismut enterprises had converted a former Huthaus from the early days of tin mining in Aue (from 1661) for this purpose. After 1990, the building was reorganised and has been called the Stadtmuseum Aue since 1991; in 2002, a new entrance area was added.
The permanent exhibition links town history with mining: it covers everything from the Stone Age in the Auer Tal (Aue valley) through industrialisation to the mining of the SDAG Wismut. The house includes a show adit that makes tin mining on the Heidelsberg tangible.
