About the museum
The Marktkeller beneath Wiesbaden's market square was built in 1900 to plans by Felix Genzmer as a vaulted cellar where market traders stored their goods. In 1999 it was converted into a market hall. Since September 2016 the city museum has presented the history of the Hesse state capital across about 1,300 square meters.
The museum is run by the Stiftung Stadtmuseum Wiesbaden, a non-profit foundation under public law founded in 2016, which receives mainly support from the state capital. The collections include the Sammlung Nassauischer Altertümer (Collection of Nassau Antiquities), which goes back to the private collection of the Frankfurt baron Johann Isaac von Gerning and was later looked after by the Verein für Nassauische Altertumskunde (Association for Nassau Antiquities), as well as a collection on the cultural and everyday history of Wiesbaden from the 19th to the 21st century. Together the holdings comprise around 350,000 objects.
The permanent exhibition uses selected objects to tell stories from the Roman era, the period as a world-famous spa town, and the present day; visitors can also choose their favorite pieces. In the "Schatzinsel" (Treasure Island) display, outstanding objects from the Nassau Antiquities collection are on view.
