About the museum
The museum is located in the former works halls of Heinr. Wesseler OHG, which built agricultural tractors in Altenberge from 1936 into the 1960s and was well known far beyond the region. From a small forge, the company had grown over the decades into a business with more than 100 employees.
From mid-2003 the buildings stood empty. Vintage tractor and machinery enthusiasts from Altenberge and the surrounding area rented the old forge for exhibition purposes and in December 2003 founded the association "Schlepper- und Gerätemuseum Altenberge e. V." Since January 1, 2018, the former factory has belonged to a private owner; the volunteer-run association continues to rent the former forge.
The museum shows the development of tractor construction from its beginnings to about 1970. Visitors also learn how agriculture became mechanized between 1900 and 1960, from draft animals to the implements attached to tractors. Information, tools and demonstrations are devoted to the blacksmith's trade. Occasionally, meetings of vintage tractor owners take place.
