About the museum

Around 1750, Carl Heinrich Wilhelm von Uechtritz had a Baroque manor house built on the Krobnitz knight's estate, which is mentioned as early as the 16th century; its entrance hall, staircase and room layout survive to this day. After several changes of ownership, the Prussian minister of war and the navy, Albrecht von Roon, bought the estate in 1873 as his retirement home. He had the mansard roof replaced by a full story with a flat balustrade, gave the facade a late Neoclassical look and added a side wing with an octagonal tower. In the expanded landscape park, the family crypt was built in 1876; in 1893 his son Waldemar had a Neo-Gothic chapel erected above it.

Four generations of the Roon family lived in Krobnitz until 1945. After the family was expropriated without compensation in the land reform, the house was used first by the Soviet army, then by refugees and expellees; apartments were installed in the 1950s, a daycare center later moved in as well, and the building fell into disrepair. The crypt chapel was demolished in 1980.

In 2000 the town of Reichenbach acquired the property and had the palace and outbuildings restored by 2005, reinstating the facade of Roon's remodeling, including the tower; the park followed by 2010. Since then the ensemble has served as a museum and event venue, and for a long time it was also the seat of the Schlesisch-Oberlausitzer Museumsverbund (museum network), which went into liquidation in early 2026. Today the permanent exhibition "Ein Stück Preußen in Sachsen" (A Piece of Prussia in Saxony) uses loans from the descendants to present the life and work of Roon and his family; concerts, talks and celebrations take place in the Alte Schmiede (old smithy).
