About the museum
The Markersdorf Village Museum lies west of Görlitz on a roughly 250-year-old four-sided farmstead. The farm of a smallholding can be seen with its fully preserved furnishings and is arranged as if the farmer and farmhands had just gone out to the field: the farmhouse, stables, barn and threshing floor, wash house, well house and bakehouse convey the living culture and hard work of country life at the beginning of the 20th century.
The museum includes a farm and herb garden with almost forgotten vegetable varieties, an orchard meadow with regional apple varieties, and farm animals. In a relocated retirement cottage, a village school from around 1900 has been set up, where visitors can experience a lesson as in their great-grandparents' day.
The museum belonged to the Silesian-Upper Lusatian Museum Association. Its focus is on the lively presentation of customs and agricultural work through the year, from flail threshing in winter to the slaughter feast in late autumn. For school classes and children's groups there are hands-on projects, such as washing laundry as 100 years ago or the journey from grain to bread.
