About the museum

The Kronburg in the Lower Allgäu was built after 1200 as the seat of a Staufer ministerial family and is first mentioned in a document in 1227. After the end of the Staufers, it passed around 1273 to the Habsburgs, who handed it on as a pledge. Later owners included the Ratzenried, the Uttenried, the Werdenstein and, from 1478 to 1604, the Rechberg; Gaudenz von Rechberg converted the castle into a residential palace by 1536.

Since 1619 the castle has belonged to the Westernach family. They had it fortified during the War of the Spanish Succession and in 1704 placed the striking onion domes on its towers. The four-winged complex around a courtyard retains remnants of the medieval keep of tuff stone, vaulted rooms, wall arabesques and wooden ceilings from the 16th century, a chapel in the south wing and prison rooms in the west wing. In 1806 the place came to Bavaria; renovations followed from 1993 to 1998.

The castle is still owned by the same family. Part of it is open as a museum: Baroness Vequel-Westernach, the lady of the castle, personally leads groups through the rooms and tells the story of the Kronburg and of the furnishings from the old family estate.
