About the museum

The MEWO Kunsthalle opened in 2005 in the former Royal Bavarian post office right next to Memmingen station. The building is provided to the town free of charge by the Memminger Wohnungsbau eG (MEWO), the housing cooperative that gives the gallery its name; the exhibition venue is run by the town of Memmingen.

The roughly 850 square meters of space are spread over three floors around a covered atrium – from the lofty former parcel hall on the first floor to the prints and drawings room under the roof. Each year the gallery shows up to ten exhibitions featuring contemporary international art, cultural history topics and regional artists. Art education is a key focus, with studios, workshops and programs for children, schools, families and seniors.

In its storage depot the Kunsthalle holds important artists' estates, including that of the Amendingen painter Josef Madlener, numerous paintings and prints by the New Objectivity painter Max Unold, the printed graphic work of Wolfgang Niesner, and reproduction engravings by Johann Gottlieb and Maria Katharina Prestel. There is no permanent display; the holdings are shown in changing collection exhibitions. Since May 2019 Memmingen's municipal museums no longer charge admission.
