About the museum
The tithe barn has stood since the Middle Ages at the eastern entrance to Kirchenstraße, between remnants of the town wall and the path up to Nanstein Castle. On the ground floor, the "gute Stube" (best room), municipal and private events take place; on the upper floor, the Heimatfreunde Landstuhl, a local heritage association in existence since 1951, set up the Sickingen Museum. The original oak beam framework that supports the upper floors is also worth seeing.
The exhibition is devoted to the knight Franz von Sickingen, his political and intellectual development and his afterlife. Since few original objects from his time survive, it relies mainly on written records, the Sickingen library of the Heimatfreunde, loans and archival material, supplemented by images and objects. Shown are, among other things, documents from the context of the Reformation and the knightly class, as well as copper engravings of his final hours.
A highlight is an iron ball of about 25 kilograms and 19 centimeters in diameter, found in 1992 during road construction work; it recalls the siege of Nanstein Castle in 1523. After a long break, the museum reopened in April 2022 with a new concept, which includes events under the title "Kultur unterm Fachwerk" and a replica cannon, the "Greif".
