Local history museum in a Baroque house in Ramstein-Miesenbach with an old-fashioned corner store, village inn, pharmacy herb room and special exhibitions.
Jumping jacks (pull-string puppets) from Michael Geib's collection of around 400 pieces – from handcrafted one-offs to advertising figures, caricatures and children's toys, supplemented by figures made by elementary school children.
About the museum
The first plans for a local history museum in Ramstein date back to 1965, when an exhibition for the town's anniversary proved very popular; however, the money earmarked for it went to other projects at the time. In the early 1980s, residents, local historians and local politicians took up the idea again. The municipality made its former town hall available, the Verbandsgemeinde (association of municipalities) took on the task, and in January 1984 the Förderkreis Heimatmuseum (friends' association) was founded, which gathered collections such as the farming implements of a farmer from Katzenbach.
The building on Miesenbacher Straße is a listed late Baroque house with a hipped mansard roof and a figure in a niche, built around 1750 for a merchant. For a long time it served as a residence, brewery and inn; it came into municipal ownership in 1949 and housed the local administration from the 1950s until 1983. After conversion, the local history museum opened in September 1987.
On around 310 square meters, the museum presents the everyday history and culture of the Westrich region in four themed rooms: a fully preserved village store, a typical village inn with iceboxes and a Kerwestrauß (traditional fair bouquet), the herb room with a laboratory from an old pharmacy in Landstuhl, and a middle-class parlor with Biedermeier furniture and plank chairs. Two to three special exhibitions a year on regional topics, lectures and events organized by the friends' association round out the program.
