About the museum
The Skulpturengarten Darmstadt was founded by the artist Elisabeth Kuhlmann and the sculptor Joachim Kuhlmann. Since 2003 they have been transforming a former military site with a Wehrmacht barracks in the woods into a place of work and exhibitions for the visual arts. The building phase up to 2009 laid the foundation for a garden where work, life, art and nature come together.
In designed garden spaces, sculptural works by Joachim Kuhlmann stand alongside objects by Elisabeth Kuhlmann, found and collected pieces, and natural sculptures. Many works address German-German history and the themes of war and peace, for example the "Höllentor" (Gate of Hell), erected in 2014 with an air-raid shelter door from the Darmstadt firestorm of 1944, an anti-war memorial, and the crucifix figure "Crucifixus", set up in 2021.
The garden hosts exhibitions and school workshops, which are part of the city of Darmstadt's permanent cultural program. Visitors can only experience the garden as part of a guided tour.
