William Kentridge im Skulpturenpark Heidelberg

Seven large sculptures by the South African artist – two painted aluminum-and-steel figures from the "Paper Procession" series and five bronzes from the "Glyphs" series – which grow out of his drawing practice and enter into dialogue with the park's collection.

About the museum

The sculpture park goes back to the association "Freunde und Förderer des Skulpturenparks Heidelberg" (Friends and Supporters of the Heidelberg Sculpture Park), founded in 1995. Its aim was to promote contemporary sculpture, give young artists a stage and at the same time offer the hospital's patients and visitors a stimulating place. The setting is the garden and landscape park of the Orthopädische Universitätsklinik (university orthopedic hospital) in the Schlierbach district on the Neckar.

The permanent exhibition now comprises 28 large outdoor sculptures, including works by Bernhard Heiliger, Gottfried Honegger, Werner Pokorny, Hans Steinbrenner, Vera Röhm, Robert Schad, Claus Bury and Alicja Kwade. Some were acquired by the association; others are on loan from artists, collectors, the Kunsthalle Mannheim or the state of Baden-Württemberg. Prints and photographs are also on display in the hospital buildings.

Every year the association organizes a special exhibition with a renowned sculptor, recently including Alicja Kwade, Alf Lechner and, in 2025, Tony Cragg. The exhibitions are funded mainly by donations. The association also awards a prize for young sculptors. In 2025 it celebrated its 30th anniversary.
