About the museum
The Flatowturm was built between 1853 and 1856 to designs by Heinrich Strack, commissioned by Prince Wilhelm, later Emperor Wilhelm I. A windmill and sawmill from the late 18th century had previously stood on this spot; it burned down in 1848. The name recalls the West Prussian estate of Flatow, whose income paid for the construction.
The 46-meter-high tower combines a round lookout tower with a residential house and is surrounded by a dry, star-shaped moat, over which a drawbridge once led. The medieval Eschenheimer Tor in Frankfurt am Main served as the model; four corner turrets crown the top. The neo-Gothic building housed guests of Prince Wilhelm and Princess Augusta and displayed their art collection, including historic chandeliers, cabinets and glassware.
Today the Prussian Palaces and Gardens Foundation (SPSG) looks after the tower. Visitors see the rooms with their original furnishings and can climb several levels to the surrounding platform, which offers a wide view over the park and the city.
