Interim presentation of masterpieces from 1900 to 1970 in the Kunstgebäude on Schlossplatz during the renovation.
King Wilhelm I of Württemberg founded the “Museum der bildenden Künste” (Museum of Fine Arts) in 1843, for which Georg Gottlob Barth built a Neoclassical three-wing building on what is now Konrad-Adenauer-Straße; an extension by Albert von Bok was added in 1888. Today's state gallery grew out of this building.
In the 20th century the museum specifically expanded its modern holdings in particular. In 1984 the Neue Staatsgalerie by British architect James Stirling opened; its colorful formal language, rich in quotations, is considered a key work of postmodernism and has been protected since 2014 as a cultural monument of special significance. In 2002 the Steib halls completed the ensemble; all parts of the building are connected and offer around 12,000 m² of exhibition space.
The collection ranges from Old German and Italian painting and the Dutch masters to an internationally significant modern collection with Picasso, Matisse, Schlemmer and Beuys, as well as contemporary art; in addition there is a large collection of prints and drawings (Graphische Sammlung) and the Archiv Sohm on Fluxus and Happening. Since 2024 the Staatsgalerie has also used parts of the Kunstgebäude on Schlossplatz.
Initial construction work for a comprehensive renovation, expected to last until 2034, has been underway since February 2026. The museum will remain open throughout; from February 2027 it will show its masterpieces of classical modernism on an interim basis in the Kunstgebäude.
