About the museum

The museum goes back to an initiative of Leipzig citizens centered on the Verein für die Geschichte Leipzigs (Society for the History of Leipzig), founded in 1867. After various exhibition venues, the collections found a permanent home in 1909 in the Altes Rathaus (Old Town Hall) on the market square. The Renaissance building from 1556 is closely associated with Johann Sebastian Bach, who was elected Thomaskantor here in 1723 and took his oath of office.

The museum survived severe war damage as well as political appropriation under two dictatorships. In 2004, the new Haus Böttchergäßchen opened as a center housing special exhibition space, the directorate, collections, library and photo archive; the children's museum is also located there. The museum also includes the Schillerhaus in Gohlis, the Museum Zum Arabischen Coffe Baum, the Völkerschlachtdenkmal (Monument to the Battle of the Nations) with the FORUM 1813 museum, operated by its own foundation since 2012, the Capa-Haus memorial site, the Alte Börse as an event hall, and the sports history collection.

With around 600,000 objects on city and regional history, everyday culture, art and decorative arts, graphic art, music and theater history, numismatics, militaria and archaeology, its collections are among the largest city history holdings in Germany. The permanent exhibition in the Altes Rathaus tells the history of Leipzig from the Middle Ages to the present with nearly 2,000 objects and is free of charge.
