About the museum
The Stadtgut consists of a 13th-century residential tower and a 19th-century barn, and is one of the oldest building complexes in Grimma. The oldest part of the tower dates from 1230 to 1239; it served as a fortified residence of a noble ministerial who may have been in the service of the margrave's castle. Around 1550, a residential building was added to the south and a barn with a half-timbered upper floor to the north. Later, various craftsmen lived here in succession; in 1867 the property was converted into an inner-city farm.
After severe flood damage in 2002, demolition threatened, but it was prevented at the last minute. The Geschichts- und Altertumsverein zu Grimma (history and antiquities association) restored the site and has made it open to the public for around 20 years; the association also has its headquarters here.
The barn houses a small, working historic threshing machine, along with tools and equipment from household and farm, large photos of the 2002 flood, and a salvaged beam structure from the Grimmaer Großmühle together with its plans. On the upper floor of the residential tower, 23 historic dollhouses from the late 19th to the first half of the 20th century are on display.
