Stadtmuseum Camburg
Town museum in the Camburg Amtshaus (district office building) of 1742 with prehistoric and early historic finds, historic workshops, an old drugstore and prison cells.
About the museum
The museum's beginnings go back to 1910, when senior teacher Türk assembled a local history collection. It found its permanent home in 1949 in the Amtshaus, which was built in 1742 on Camburg's oldest settlement site. That parts of the building once served as a prison is still shown today by three heavy oak doors with old bolts and peepholes as well as a preserved cell.
The exhibition ranges from Paleolithic hand axes and other archaeological finds from the Camburg area through tools and weapons of various cultures to the history of the town and county and the more recent past. Local crafts get a lot of space: furnished workshops include a bookbindery, a shoemaker's workshop, a cooperage and a wheelwright's workshop.
Among the more recent acquisitions is the complete shop furnishing of the Germania Drogerie (drugstore), which closed its doors in Camburg in 2007. A music box from 1890 is gladly demonstrated, a parlor recalls the former brewery "Camburg Bräu", and a Prussian war chest dates from the time of the Napoleonic Wars. In addition, the museum shows changing exhibitions and invites visitors to readings, lectures and concerts.
