About the museum
On October 14, 1806, the Prussian main army was defeated near Hassenhausen by French troops under Marshal Davout; the Prussian commander-in-chief, Duke Carl Wilhelm Ferdinand of Brunswick, was mortally wounded here. Since then, the village has been regarded as a symbolic site of European history.
The Verein Gedenkstätte Hassenhausen 1806, founded in 1991, set up a memorial in the parsonage in 1994. At first it focused entirely on the battle, with a diorama, eyewitness accounts and finds. For the 200th anniversary in 2006, it was redesigned as a history museum together with the Braunschweigisches Landesmuseum.
Today the exhibition places the battle in European history, from the French Revolution to the founding of the German Empire. On display are original finds from the battlefield, maps, graphics and a diorama with 600 tin figures. Outside, the church, monuments and memorial stones form part of the ensemble.
