About the museum

The Stadtmuseum Euskirchen opened in 1992 in the Dicken Turm, a defensive tower of the old city wall, and an adjoining Gründerzeit building on Kirchstraße. Because of fire-safety deficiencies, the museum had to close at the end of 2010. The city then built the Kulturhof, a new building for the city library and the museum, between Wilhelmstraße and Neutorwall; the museum moved there in 2012.

The building lies between the old and new towns. A section of the medieval city wall is incorporated into the rooms and is partly visible. The permanent exhibition traces the city's history from Roman times to the present and begins at the city model, which shows Euskirchen before industrialization. The final section on the city in the 20th century was added in November 2015 and includes eyewitness accounts, photos and objects contributed by residents.

In July 2021 the flood disaster also damaged the museum; parts of the collection had to be rescued and restored, and the museum later reopened. Today, alongside the permanent exhibition, the museum presents changing special exhibitions, offers guided tours and city tours, and runs a broad program for school classes and children. The city of Euskirchen operates the museum.
