About the museum
The Geschichtswerkstatt is the successor to the former Zülpich local history museum in the old provostry on the Mühlenberg. When its rooms were incorporated into the new Museum of Bathing Culture, the local history museum had to close. Between 2009 and October 2011, the Zülpich History Society moved most of the holdings into newly refurbished rooms in the Landesburg, which also stands on the Mühlenberg; the exhibition opened in October 2011.
The museum is run by the town of Zülpich and the History Society, whose members look after the exhibition on a voluntary basis and revise it again and again. It is organised into prehistory, the first millennium, the Middle Ages and more recent history, complemented by a section on the Church that spans all periods.
Information columns summarise the key facts, and freely accessible drawer cabinets allow visitors to browse documents in more depth. On display are Roman finds, an 18th-century town plan, a middle-class living room of the 19th century, the historic town seals and a section on the Jewish history of Zülpich. Short films and a small library on local history round out the offering.
