FORESTRUM – Ein Ort schafft sich Raum

The women artists' collective trans_form_art combines regional industrial materials such as wire, steel, and coal with natural materials to create installations, projections, and performances.

About the museum

The building on today's Fritz-Kühn-Platz was built in 1726 as a Baroque townhouse right next to the Pankratiuskirche, Iserlohn's oldest church. In the 19th century it served as an armory (Zeughaus) and was stormed during the Iserlohn uprising of 1849 – an event that the exhibition also commemorates today.

The municipal collection was first presented as the "Haus der Heimat" (house of local heritage); since 1987 the Stadtmuseum has been housed in the former armory. On three floors, the permanent exhibition follows Iserlohn's development from geological history and early settlement to the years after World War II.

The focus is on the economic history of a city shaped by calamine mining, chain mail and wire manufacturing, needle production, and brass and bronze goods. Among the best-known objects are the elaborately decorated Iserlohn tobacco boxes, coffee grinders by the firm Kissing & Möllmann, and a cave bear skeleton; everyday history is illustrated by items such as the still-working record counter of the former Musikhaus Muck music store.

The Stadtmuseum is the headquarters of the Museen der Stadt Iserlohn, which also include the Historische Fabrikenanlage Maste-Barendorf with the needle museum and the Museum Haus Letmathe. Tours of the World War II air-raid tunnel beneath the old town also start from the museum. Since 2017 the museum has been an anchor museum in the "Preußen in Westfalen" (Prussia in Westphalia) network.
