About the museum

The Stadtmuseum Rottweil is housed in the Herdersches Haus (Herder House) on Hauptstraße. The then mayor, Caspar Ignazius Herderer, had it built anew in 1709 between two medieval dividing walls; his son Thaddäus refurnished it around 1780. After an antiquities hall was set up on the first floor around 1884, the museum now uses the entire building for exhibitions and storage.

The focus is on the history of the former imperial city, with its Kaiserliches Hofgericht (imperial court) and its connection to the Swiss Confederation. Treasures include the Bundesbrief (Federal Charter) of 1519 and the Pürschgerichtskarte (Pürschgericht map) by David Rötlin from 1564, an important document of cartography. Another focus is everyday life in Rottweil between 1750 and 1870.

In the Fasnetszimmer (Fasnet Room), visitors learn more about the Rottweil Fasnet, whose origins are documented in the 15th century. A special feature is the Herrenkramer’sches Kripple, a baroque playing nativity that is brought "to life" on Sundays and public holidays during the Christmas season. The house is part of Rottweil's municipal museums.
