About the museum
The roots of the Städtische Galerie go back to 1961, when the first exhibitions took place in the foyer of the concert and theater hall. The gallery made a name for itself with thematic exhibitions and solo presentations of contemporary art, and it was especially committed to young artists.
In 1999 it moved into new rooms designed by the artist Stephen Craig in the Alte Weberei, an industrial heritage site. A large and a small exhibition pavilion together offer roughly 450 square meters of space. The smaller pavilion is also used, when needed, for art school projects, film screenings and lectures. In the same year the art school began its work, developing offers for schools, kindergartens and families.
The program includes the Kunstpreis der Stadt Nordhorn (Nordhorn City Art Prize), awarded annually since 1979, the Architekturforum, the Trickfilmtage (animation film days) and the free cultural magazine SCHÖN. The gallery also looks after kunstwegen, an open museum of contemporary art along a cycle route.
