About the museum
The painter, graphic artist and sculptor Otto Pankok (1893–1966) lived in Gildehaus for some time in the summer of 1936. The National Socialists had labeled him “degenerate” and banned him from working. Nevertheless, over 100 large charcoal drawings were created in that short time, showing the village, its residents, the mills, the Reformed church and the sandstone quarries.
A group of volunteers wanted to show these works in the place where they were created, and in 1994 organized a one-month exhibition. The great success led to plans for a museum, which opened in autumn 1996 in the Alte Rathaus of Gildehaus. It is run on a volunteer basis by the association Otto Pankok Gildehaus e. V.
On the upper floor, a permanent exhibition presents a cross-section of Pankok's work, focusing on his connection to Gildehaus. The museum also devotes itself to his students and associates and fills the remaining rooms with three to four changing exhibitions a year. Pankok saw himself as a humanist and pacifist, and the sponsoring association wants to convey this attitude alongside his art.
