About the museum

The exhibition is housed in the Altes Hafenamt on the Dortmund inner harbor. The neo-Renaissance building was constructed at the end of the 1890s to designs by the municipal building inspector Friedrich Kullrich and was meant to announce the harbor to boatmen from afar. Emperor Wilhelm II even spent the night in the building at the opening of the harbor in 1899. Until 1962, it served as the administration of the harbor company; in the 1980s, it was comprehensively restored. Today it is a listed building and also part of the Route of Industrial Heritage (Route der Industriekultur).

The exhibition is run by the Gesellschaft zur Förderung von Hafen und Schiffahrt e. V. (Society for the Promotion of Harbor and Shipping), which uses several rooms in the building. Ship and harbor models explain inland navigation and modern port management and provide insight into the history and development of the Dortmund harbor. The building also still contains the Kaiserzimmer (Emperor's Room), with its furnishings from 1899.

The Altes Hafenamt is currently undergoing comprehensive modernization; according to the available information, the exhibition is not regularly accessible until further notice. For special dates, such as Open Monument Day, the building occasionally opens to visitors.
