About the museum

The idea of a national soccer museum emerged after Germany hosted the 2006 World Cup: the Deutscher Fußball-Bund (German Football Association) wanted to make the history of the sport in Germany permanently accessible. In 2009 Dortmund prevailed over several rival cities in the competition for the location.

The building opposite Dortmund's main train station was designed by HPP Hentrich-Petschnigg + Partner together with pmp Architekten. The striking building with its illuminated facade opened on October 23, 2015. In addition to the exhibition floors, it includes a multifunctional arena, event spaces, and a small soccer field on the forecourt.

The permanent exhibition tells some 140 years of German soccer in two "halves": first the national teams from 1954 to the 2014 World Cup title, then club soccer and the Bundesliga. Around 1,600 exhibits – jerseys, boots, balls, and trophies – are combined with media stations, a 3D cinema, and a 360-degree Bundesliga show. Women's soccer and social issues also have their place.

The Hall of Fame of German soccer was added in 2019. The museum is run by the DFB-Stiftung Deutsches Fußballmuseum; major special exhibitions, such as the 2026 immersive show on Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz, round out the program.
