About the museum
The Stauffenberg Memorial Site in the Old Castle commemorates Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, who grew up in Stuttgart, and his brother Berthold. It opened on November 15, 2006, Claus von Stauffenberg's birthday. The idea came from then state minister Christoph Palmer; the exhibition was designed and realized by the House of History Baden-Württemberg on behalf of the state foundation (Landesstiftung).
From May 2019 the memorial site was closed due to renovation work in the Old Castle. In the meantime, the exhibition "Attentat. Stauffenberg" ran at the House of History. On November 20, 2022, the memorial site reopened with a new multimedia concept. It is located in the listed basement of the archive building.
At its center are Stauffenberg's biography, from Wehrmacht officer to key figure of the resistance, the course of July 20, 1944, and an art installation on the failed attempt. Rare original objects such as his cello and his ceremonial saber are on display. A separate area asks how Stauffenberg and the attempt were judged at different times and in different countries. Media stations deepen the content. The Stauffenberg Gesellschaft Baden-Württemberg supports the institution.
