About the museum
The signal box "Df" at the former Köln-Dünnwald operations station was built in 1929 and controlled train traffic on a section of the Köln–Düsseldorf–Duisburg freight line. Until 1970, signals and switches were set mechanically by levers and wire cables; then a push-button relay interlocking of the DrS2 type replaced the old technology. In 2010 the installation was shut down as part of the line modernization.
From 2011, the association Stellwerk Köln-Dünnwald e. V. converted the building into a museum of signal and telecommunications technology with a railway operations simulation. The centerpiece is the preserved DrS2 installation, whose original relay system can be viewed through glass in part of the control room. In addition, one of the first electronic signal boxes of the SIMIS B type (1991), from Essen-Kupferdreh, was rebuilt and made fully operational, along with the telephone exchange of a signal box.
During guided tours, visitors learn how train movements were and still are secured, and at the simulation system they can take on the role of a train dispatcher. The building is also used to train future technicians in control and signaling technology.
