About the museum
Himmelkron was shaped by a Cistercian convent from the 13th century. With the death of the last abbess, Margarethe von Döhlau, in 1569, the convent period ended; the Protestant margraves of Brandenburg-Kulmbach and later Brandenburg-Bayreuth then took over the place. The convent church became the Protestant parish church, and members of the margrave's family were buried in the princely crypt.
On 29 April 1991, during restoration work in the choir, sandstone slabs were raised and found to be painted on their undersides: an image of Christ, apostles and foolish virgins, probably created around 1490. At a symposium in 2000, experts called them a rarity of the first order.
The Stiftskirchenmuseum displays these slabs alongside a Mount of Olives group made around 1500, processional crosses, liturgical objects, books, banners from the princely crypt and cast-iron gravestones. It is complemented by the cloister and the Knights' Chapel, which are part of the tour.
