About the museum

Lindewerra on the Werra bears the nickname "Stockmacherdorf Deutschlands" (Germany's walking-stick-makers' village). In 1836 the stick maker Wilhelm Ludwig Wagner began making walking aids here from young oak shoots found in the surrounding area. The trade spread quickly: around 1860 six makers worked in the village, by 1915 there were already 15 family businesses, and in the 1920s up to 500,000 sticks were produced. After 1990 the number of workshops declined considerably.

To document the development of this unusual craft, a small museum was set up in a former stick maker's workshop in 1980 and has been expanded step by step since. In the workroom and the bakehouse, visitors can follow the work steps – the exhibition counts about 32 – by which a blank becomes a hiking, walking, medical, or hunting stick. Tools, documents, photos, and old and new sticks illustrate the technique and history of the craft, which is still practiced in Lindewerra today.

Design and visitor services are in the hands of the Heimatverein des Stockmacherdorfes Lindewerra (local heritage association), which was founded in 1995 and has more than 40 members.
