About the museum
The South Hessian Crafts Museum is housed in the former Roßdorf railway station, a brick building from 1897. The municipality acquired the building in the early 1980s, after operations had ceased on the line between Darmstadt and Groß-Zimmern. At the suggestion of the Kulturhistorischer Verein Roßdorf (cultural history association of Roßdorf), founded in 1984, the conversion into a museum was decided; the museum opened in 1988.
On about 650 square meters, the museum shows more than 30 sections on crafts, agriculture and village life from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. Reconstructed workshops with tools and machines recall the blacksmith, wheelwright, cooper, potter, saddler, shoemaker, tailor and hatmaker. There are also textile and basketry, a mill, a printing shop, a country doctor's practice and an organ-building workshop.
A second hall, the Museums-Remise (museum carriage house), was added in 1996. Since 2002 the Fekete Gallery has shown works by the local artist Esteban Fekete. The museum is run by the Kulturhistorischer Verein on a volunteer basis.
