About the museum
The museum was founded in the 1960s by the Association for Local History (Verein für Heimatgeschichte). The town gradually made the entire former town hall on Otto-Weber-Anlage available to it. Initially set up as a local history museum, it quickly developed into a specialist museum for the “rural” industrial culture in and around Ober-Ramstadt.
Its focus is on vehicle and industrial manufacturing, as well as a unique collection on the plastics industry, which traces the path from the comb-making craft of the 18th century to modern plastics processing. The permanent exhibition “Ein Tag in Ober-Ramstadt” (A Day in Ober-Ramstadt) takes visitors to the 1920s and 1930s. They follow historical figures and explore interactive stations on companies such as DAW (Caparol), Schröbel, and the Röhr works, as well as a general store and a hair salon.
Further collections are devoted to the natural scientist and writer Georg Christoph Lichtenberg, born in Ober-Ramstadt, with his library, and to the firm Heim. The City History Archive is located in the railway station building.
