Suppenmuseum
Museum in the former town hall of Neudorf in "Suppenland" (soup country): kitchens from 1910 to 1970 and thousands of everyday objects about soup and cooking.
About the museum
Neudorf in the upper Ore Mountains is known in the region as "Suppenland" (soup country). The nickname is explained by a legend about the forest spirit Katznhans, who went from house to house in the village asking for food and got a different soup everywhere. In fact, in the poor, harsh mountain villages, soup was for a long time the most affordable everyday food.
The Heimatverein "Am Fichtelberg" e.V. (local heritage association), founded in 2011, runs the museum as a nonprofit association. At first the collection was housed in small rooms in the living quarters of the Gasthof "Kaiserhof"; when space ran out, it moved into the village's former town hall, where the newly designed museum opened on August 1, 2013.
Under the guiding theme "Von der Sage bis zur Gegenwart" (From the Legend to the Present), seven rooms show well over 10,000 everyday objects. Four furnished kitchens from around 1910, 1930, 1960, and 1970 show how people lived, cooked, and worked in Neudorf; the "Löffellei" (spoon collection) alone comprises over 1000 spoons. Every year in October the association invites visitors to the "Kirmes im Suppenland" (soup country fair) with a soup cooking competition.
