About the museum

The Museum of the Air Battle over the Ore Mountains was founded in 1996, eighteen months before it first opened to visitors. It was backed by more than twelve years of documentation and historical research by the Letecko historická skupina Kovářská (Kovářská Aviation History Group) and the Slet Plzeň association. The municipality of Kovářská became the third founder, providing premises and financial support. The museum was officially opened on 13 September 1997 by American and German veterans of the battle.

The museum commemorates the air combat over the Ore Mountains on 11 September 1944, one of the heaviest air engagements of the Second World War over continental Europe. It is dedicated to the memory of airmen of all nationalities who died over Czechoslovakia and Germany.

The exhibition includes parts of shot-down aircraft, historical photographs and documents, uniforms and dioramas. It presents the course of the battle, the fates of its participants and the air war from 1939 to 1945 in chronological order. The museum is a member of several American veterans' associations, for example The 100th Bomb Group (H) Foundation.
