About the museum

The Tarnbunker Neumühl is a Regelbau 10a of the Westwall, built in 1938 on the edge of Neumühl. A year later it received a camouflage superstructure in the form of a habitable attic, so that it would blend into the village scene. In 1939/1940 it served as a command post; in the second half of the war, many Neumühl residents sought shelter here from air raids.

After the war the bunker was not blown up, because the attic was lived in; instead, prisoners of war filled it with concrete and rubble from demolished installations. In 2007/2008 the attic was torn down, although heritage protection had been in force since 2005; an approved demolition of the entire structure was never carried out. Between 2012 and 2015, volunteers removed the concrete fill again.

Since 2017 a friends' association has looked after the structure. Donation-funded construction phases brought access, leveling of the ground, the reconstructed roof structure, an external staircase and grounding; the interior fit-out was completed in May 2025 and the camouflage superstructure was opened. It serves as a communication and information center, meant to recall the burden fortification work placed on the civilian population, and to show the present-day importance of the western fortifications for nature and heritage conservation and for civic education.
