About the museum

The nonprofit association Technik-Museum Kassel was founded in September 2005 to make the rich industrial history of Kassel and northern Hesse visible. In 2010, the museum opened on Wolfhager Straße in the Rothenditmold district. Today it is managed by a nonprofit operating company (gGmbH) and supported by many volunteers.

The site itself bears witness to industrial history: from 1871, Henschel built its Plant II here, with a boiler shop and forge, its own power station and a hydraulic pressure system; production continued in the halls until the late 1990s. The museum uses two bays of the former boiler shop as well as office buildings for exhibition space and storage. On the same grounds, a separate association runs the Henschel-Museum.

The collection ranges from mining through steam, electrical and communications technology to machine tools, firefighting, aviation and medical technology; a focus is on rail vehicles and historic KVG trams, which have been here since the end of 2014. Since 2015, model railway enthusiasts have been building the large layout "Bebra 1958". An object of the month and an oral history project on regional technology history round out the exhibition.

Highlights

  • Model railway layout "Bebra 1958" (H0 scale, about 22 × 8 m)
  • Class 44 steam locomotive and historic Kassel trams
  • Wooden model of the locomotive "Drache"
  • Replica of a Lilienthal glider
  • Factory halls of the former Henschel Plant II

Permanent exhibitions

  • Technik aus Kassel und Nordhessen – The exhibition in the halls of the former Henschel boiler shop presents products and inventions from about 300 years of regional technology history – from locomotives and trams through energy and communications technology to medical and aviation technology.
  • Modellbahn „Bebra 1958“ – Large H0-scale layout that faithfully recreates the Bebra railway junction in fall 1958, including the lines toward Cornberg and Hönebach, and is operated according to a timetable.
